The Untersberg Mountain Mystery
It is said that hundreds of people have gone missing around the Untersberg Mountain, on the border of Germany and Austria.
Apparently, in 1987, three people entered the cave system of the mountain on an exploration, and did not return. Police and mountaineers searched for them, and the only trace their found was their car, parked nearby.
Life went on. Three months later, the relatives of the missing people received a phone call. It was the missing people. They found themselves on a ship in the red sea, that was nearly at Alexandra in Egypt. They have no recollection of what happened to them once they entered the mountain, how they got where they were, how 3 months had passed, etc. They claimed they must have ‘time-jumped’, and that all they could assume was that there was some kind of portal in the cave system of the mountain.
They found their way to the German Consulate in Alexandria, and eventually made their way home to Munich. It was when they returned home that they changed their story, creating an elaborate tale on where they had been and why (I guess both tales they told were elaborate really). They advised that did not go into the mountain caves at all. Instead, they left their car there, walked to the train station, and took a train to Salzburg and Villach in Austria. As they had left their passports behind, and when they mistakenly passed the Austria/Yugoslavia border, they panicked. Afraid of the authorities, they got on a ship and journeyed on the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. So basically, they travelled through six countries, on foot, with no passports… hmmm.
History buffs may also recognise the name of the mountain as Hitler had a house close by, his mountain getaway, which had a stunning view of the mountain.
The Dali Lama calls the mountain the “sleeping dragon. There is a myth which tells of time portals, lost people and dwarf-like mountain dwellers to are responsible for the cave system.
There are other legends of missing people. One states that in 1738, a hunter by the name of Michael Hulzogger went missing, only to appear at his own memorial, a year to the day after his disappearance. Apparently this was reported in the Farmers Almanac for that year. Legend continues that he only confessed what had happened to him to one person, and that person was Archbishop Firman of Salzberg. Apparently the Archbishop resigned his position after hearing what Michael had to say.
Another legend is that an entire wedding party, including the band, disappeared for 100 years, only to re-emerge, unchanged.
Reports of missing people in the area continue to this day. Gives a whole new meaning to “The Hills are Alive”…
